I've gotten migraines ever since I was about 14 or 15. In the last few years, I've noticed that they are most frequent just before my menstrual period. Is there some connection between female hormones and migraine headaches? If so, does anybody know if they will lessen after menopause?

Hi, Lorraine, and welcome to the community! Your question struck a chord in me because I am a lifelong migraine sufferer. So I did a quick Google search, and found that neurologists have known for quite a while that migraines are associated with women's menstrual periods. In fact, the July 27, 2004, issue of Neurology, a peer-reviewed journal, stated that half of all women who seek clinical treatment for migraines have reported an association between migraine and menstruation. They even refer to it as 'menstrual migraine'. Diary card analysis showed that in the five days preceding menstruation, women were 25 percent more likely to have migraine; migraine was 71 percent more likely to occur during the two days before menstruation. The chance of migraine was more than twofold on the first day of menstruation and within five days afterward. There is a promising drug treatment, however. Use of frovatriptan reduced the occurrence of migraine, with the incidence of migraine using placebo at 67 percent, with once-daily frovatriptan at 52 percent, and twice-daily frovatriptan at 41 percent. Both frovatriptan regimens also reduced migraine severity, duration and the use of additional migraine medication. I don't know if migraines lessen after menopause, although it seems that logically they would. Hope this info helps you!

There is definitely a link between headaches and hormones because after I had a hysterectomy I had to try several different hormone medications, which gave me terrible headaches. Unfortunately I still have headaches but have had them my entire life. Sissy

Thanks for the great replies, everybody! I just wish these migraines would stop. Meanwhile, I'm trying some stress-reduction techniques that seem to be helping somewhat.

I'm another menstration migraine gal! My doctor has me take 800 mg of motrin 3 times a day during my period to keep the migraines at bay. Whenever I start getting one, I look at the calendar, and sure enough, my period is about to start. My doctor also said that zinc is supposed to prevent migraines although i haven't tried that. The problem withmost of the preventive medicine is that you're not supposed to take it when pregnant or trying to get pregnant and I sure would like one more little one...

For those that do not have a prescription for the motrin a doctor told me that you could take 3 or 4 ibuprofen instead to equal the dosage! Sissy
