Post topic: Is Multiple Sclerosis Hereditary?

Does anyone know if MS has any genetic component to it? My stepmother has multiple sclerosis, and now my 40-year-old half-sister is scared to death she may get it someday. Is there much of a chance of this happening?

From what I understand, multiple sclerosis *can* have a familial component to it. I don't think the doctors and researchers really know much about the causes of MS. But I've heard of several families that MS seems to run in.

I have been to numerous lectures on MS because my wife suffers from it daily. They have been saying that there is nothing genetically linking people but they concluded that most people with MS are people who once lived in northern states who move to southern states. I myself moving from Brooklyn, NY to Clermont, Florida.

I think that they were eluding to the climate change connection. I didnt hear them say anything genetically predisposing someone to MS.

the doctors have been telling my mother for the last 10 years, since she been diagnosed with MS, that there is no connection genetically. However, my family has proven otherwise. My grandmother died about the age of 55 from MS, my mother has it, and now my uncle was recently diagnosed with it a week ago. I also don't see any connection between climates, because my mother has lived in the desert on the west coast for last 30 years and my uncle has lived in New York for the last 20-30 years. I guess my sister and I will wait and see what happens.

This is what I found at National MS Society website when I searched under causes: "The genes a person inherits help determine whether that person is at increased risk for developing MS. While there is evidence from studies that this genetic component exists, it appears to be only one factor among several that determine who gets MS. Most likely, an individual's genetic blueprint ultimately determines if that individual will be susceptible to a triggering factor in the environment, which in turn initiates the autoimmune process that leads to the development of MS." Here's the website for the National MS Society if anyone wants to do further research on it: http://www.nationalmssociety.org/site/PageServer?pagename=hom_gen_homepage
