Post topic: Excessive Drinking Increases Risk of Breast Cancer

Women who drank between one and two alcoholic drinks per day increased their risk of breast cancer by 10 percent compared with people who consumed less than one drink each day, the study found. The risk of breast cancer jumped by 30 percent in women who drank more than three drinks a day. Three or more drinks a day, whether beer, wine or spirits, boost a woman's risk of breast cancer as much as smoking a pack of cigarettes, U.S. researchers said. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer killer of women, after lung cancer. It will be diagnosed in 1.2 million people globally this year and will kill 500,000. Other studies have shown that light- to moderate alcohol use can protect against heart attacks, though Klatsky said other mechanisms were probably at work.

You know, Cheerful, sometimes you just have to wonder... My doctor has always encouraged me to have one to two glasses of red wine each day in order to deal with my cholesterol levels. My "good" cholesterol (HDL) is extremely low, and seems to be genetic. So drinking one or two alcoholic beverages a day will help my cardiovascular health. But drinking one or two alcoholic beverages a day will increase my risk of breast cancer. It's so hard to decide which study to go with, lol!

It seems like if something is good for you in one way then it's bad in another way! So, yup, pick your poison! (I choose mine in the form of cranberry and vodka... hey, the cranberry is good for your urinary tract;)

LOL, Cheerful! My poison is gin and tonic. My orthopedic surgeon advised me many years ago to drink 8 ounces of tonic water every day. The quinine in it helps with muscle spasms. He winked at me, and said that I could always add an ounce of gin to it!
