A very close friend of mine is using Crystal Meth all the time lately. He started tweaking last year, at first because he said it helped him study better. But now his attitude really sucks, and his behavior is kind of offensive. Is there anything I can do to help him? I don't want to lose him as a friend.

Hi, Sparky! Your question really struck a chord with me. When my son was between the ages of 18 and 22, he was addicted to crystal meth. It is an extremely dangerous drug, and many young people die from it. My son's behavior, like that of your friend's, became totally obnoxious. I really thought I was going to lose him. He "bottomed out" however, when he was 22 years of age. He tried rehab several times, but refused to go to 12-step meetings. He did not become clean and sober until he admitted to himself that he needed the meetings. He also went into a 1-year residential program offered by the Salvation Army. He's been off drugs now for 12 years. You might want to contact your local Narcotics Anonymous chapter for help or advise. NA has groups called Nar-Anon for the friends and family members of addicts. I bet they can help you! Good luck.

I don't know a whole lot about drugs but apparently meth is pretty popular in the area where I live in CA. Since I have no experience with anything like this, it scares the heck out of me. It's scary that so many people seem to get involved in it between the ages of 18-22. That's such an impressionable time in their lives. There aren't any local colleges in the and not a lot of jobs so I figured that was why the drug use was high around here. But if the college students are doing it... I'm not sure what to think. I hope you can find help for your friend. Keep us updated on his progress.

I called the Narcotics Anonymous number I found in the 'meeting' section of our local newspaper. They told me I should come to an open meeting this week, and maybe pick up some literature. I guess the open meetings are where everybody is welcome, not just addicts. I'm also going to go to the weekend meeting of NarAnon, the group for friends and family members. Wish me luck!

This drug is really taking the world by storm. It is terrible and also very dangerous. There are many support groups and information on the net to help those in need or family members. Sissy
