Post topic: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Enterovirus Infection

Researchers have determined that chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) may be caused by enteroviruses, which have long been known to cause gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. The new research is based on a study that discovered evidence of chronic enterovirus infection in the stomach biopsy samples in 4 out 5 CFS patients. The control group of healthy individuals showed the presence of enterovirus in only 1 out 5 people.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), enteroviruses are the second most common cause of respiratory infections. Most people who are infected with an enterovirus have no symptoms at all, however.

The major symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome is severe fatigue not relieved by rest and lasting for six months or longer. Other symptoms include muscle and joint pain, memory and concentration problems, depression, sleep problems, headaches, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and/or gastrointestinal problems. For many years, doctors assumed that the Barr-Epstein virus, which causes mononucleosis, was implicated in CFS. However, this assumption was never able to be proven. It is estimated that up to 2.5 percent of all Americans are afflicted with CFS.

It would be so fantastic if the medical researchers really can pin chronic fatigue syndrome down! Then maybe they can come up with an effective treatment for the condition. I've heard so many people say that doctors have told them it's all in their head!

I've seen so many people post their stories on this site about having chronic fatigue syndrom! It would be terrible if it turns out to be contagious.
