I have been a life-long smoker, and it is certainly taking a toll on my health lately. I started smoking when I was 14, and now I am 52. (I am trying to quit -- I just need to go to town first and get some nicotine-replacement products.) I have developed a chronic cough in the past year or so that worries me a lot, but I can't afford to see a doctor. From what I've read about coughs, I'm pretty sure it's chronic bronchitis. Does anyone know of any over-the-counter treatments or herbs I could try to alleviate this darn cough? Thanks!

Congratulations on taking the first step to quitting tobacco! My grandpa has COPD, although I think he has emphysema too. He has to use an inhaler, like the ones' you use for asthma. I haven't heard of any herbs, and the only OTC remedies I can think of are cough syrups. Maybe you can ask a pharmacist? Good luck on not smoking!! :)

I think smoking is the biggest culprit because I have two family members with COPD and both smoke or did when they were younger. Scarry.

I have an aunt who was diagnosed with COPD a couple years ago. The scary thing is she quit smoking about 17 years before she was diagnosed. That is kind of depressing...

That is so sad when someone makes a change for the better and then they find out that they have a disease or disorder. Sorry to hear.

I had forgotten about this but when my mother was younger she had chronic bronchitis. It was a constant battle until she ran across a doctor that began treating her for allegeries. He said that for some it is a side effect of bad allegeries!

I know that at a certain point it is certainly not allegeries but probably does not help it either!
Hope this helps!
