Post topic: Allergic Reaction

Lately I’ve been having an allergic reaction that curiously enough always happens in a night time. I get itchy, cramps, my face gets red and I develop a rash on my chest and back. I’ve had tests and it’s not allergy to foods, my lipase test was elevated. I am confused as to what could cause this allergic reaction. Any ideas?

This sounds like an anaphylactic reaction, which may or may not be on an allergic basis. A good place to start is to keep detailed diaries of what you eat and are exposed to. I would still suggest seeing a board certified allergist to help ID the cause of it.

Are you taking any medications or over-the-counter drugs? Drugs that can cause elevated lipase levels include bethanechol, cholinergics, codeine, indomethacin, meperidine, methacholine, and morphine. Elevated serum lipase levels frequently are associated with disorders affecting the pancreas, kidneys, and intestines.

When did this start? If you can pinpoint when you started having the problem, maybe you can work backwards and figure out what might be triggering it. How long has it been going on?

I use to have rashes that would come on and then disappear, the dermatologist had me keep a diary so that is excellent advice. They never did figure out what mine was, but it finally stopped - good luck to you Sissy

I had several bouts of hives when I was younger - nobody ever figured out what it was, and then I quit having them. I got some antihistamines from a doctor to get me through the itching.

My children have very sensitive skin and the doctor told us that when they break out into a rash they should take an antihistamine for a 24 hour period to rule out an allegeric reaction. Worth a shot I guess! Sissy
