Post topic: A reason for cholesterol?		  
I'm wondering if there is a reason that our bodies make cholesterol. Sometimes I wonder if trying to get rid of it will just make some other physical problem happen. Any thoughts?

Wow - what an interesting thought! It would be ironic if the statin drugs that doctors hand out like candy turn out to be destructive in the long run. I mean, what if cholesterol turns out to protect cells from cancer? Just a thought. Cholesterol has many important functions in the human body. It forms the lining of every cell wall in the body, as well as forming a protective coat (myelin sheath) around each of our peripheral nerves. Cholesterol is also the substrate from which the hormones testosterone, estrogen and cortisone are made. It is so important to our survival that our livers manufacture it. In fact, 75% of the cholesterol in our blood stream comes from the liver. I wonder if the doctors really know what the "optimum" cholesterol levels really are in the human body...

Yes..I just got lab test yesterdey for my cholosterol and some other stuff that I am not sure off at this time. In a seminar I've attend there was free check-up and they told me mine was high (total)...269 I believe...so I went and get a real test done...to see good or bad one is high.. i have to fast for12-14 hrs...top off that hospital send me to wrong area and I waited additional 2 hrs until they realized theire mistake :(..I was starving.

Hi, Fiju. Whenever I have to get a lipid panel or cholesterol test done, I have to be "fasting" too. I am so hungry by the time I get home, especially since I have to drive for about 75 minutes just to get to the clinic! But I guess that "fasting-state" blood tests give a more accurate picture ... or my doctor is a sadist, lol!

I guess it is because they dont want it to be influenced by certain foods so they say fasting! LOL - I guess it is easier than listing off everything that we cant have!! Sissy
