I want to quit smoking cigarettes for good. I've smoked since I was in junior high school, and I know it's way past time for me to quit! Does anybody know if using nicotine replacment products, like Nicorette gum or Commit lozenges, will improve my chances of quitting? I've heard some people say that 'cold turkey' works best in the long run. But frankly, that approach scares me to death! Is it hard to quit using the nicotine gum?

hey Lorraine

I smoke too and the cold turkey method has not worked for me. My wife is a nurse and swears by the patches that they sell over the counter - I just havent tried yet.

Hi, Lorraine, and welcome to the community! It's great that you want to quit smoking! You will feel soooo much better! When I quit a couple years ago, I tried the nicotine gum first, but I have TMJ (temporalmandibular joint disorder) and it was too rough on my gums. So I switched to the Commit lozenge. That worked out pretty well for me. I still had cravings, but the lozenges dulled them down considerably. Give them a try!

Thank you for the replies! I think I've pretty much decided that cold turkey is not for me. So I am gonna go with lozenges, although I may ask my doctor about the inhaler I've heard about. Wish me luck, guys! :)

Let us know how the lozenges work for you. I've been considering quitting myself but I haven't had the guts to try it. Maybe you can inspire me to try the lozenges...

How is everyone doing with the cessation? Any luck or stories to share?
