Post topic: New Guidelines for Physical Exercise

The American College of Sports Medicine, along with the American Heart Association, has revised its guidelines for physical-activity levels. This is the first time in 12 years that the guidelines have been updated. Both organizations are now recommending the following:

1) Moderately intense cardio workouts (such as power walking) five days per week for 30 minutes a day. OR vigorously intense cardio workouts (like running) three days per week for 20 minutes a day.

2) Strength-training exercises: 8 to 10 different exercises, like push-ups or stomach crunches, two times per week for a total of 8 to 12 times for each exercise.

3) For people aged 65 or older, flexibility exercises (like stretching) should be added to the strength training.

Thanks for sharing - exercise is so good for us, in moderation. It is just getting motivated that is sometimes the problem!!

Sissy, sometimes when I'm having trouble becoming motivated to do exercise, I give myself a reward if I do it. For example, I'll buy myself a music CD or a new DVD movie if I exercise a certain amount of days within a month. It doesn't work all the time, but it usually helps me focus.
