Hi - My father who is 73 seems to be going through some mental changes. He's become really judgmental and critical and nothing is every 'right' for him. Could personality changes be related to something like Alzheimer's?

Personality changes could be a sign it starts differently for some people. Also people that are having heart problems are sometimes known to have personality changes.

Is he experiencing any memory loss? My mother, who is 70 years old, has become much more critical, judgmental, and hard to be around. She does not have Alzheimer's, though. It seems that age is accentuating and intensifying the difficult parts of her personality that she has always had. Good luck, hon! Dealing with aging parents is so hard at times, IMHO.

www.alzinfo.org has lots of info on alzheimers disease if you want to check it out. The symptoms are listed at: http://www.alzinfo.org/top-alzheimers-symptoms.asp Mood swings are on the list but I'm more familiar with the confusion or memory loss aspect of it. Personally, I think crankiness is just a part of aging . My grandmother said she's earned the right to be cranky whenever she wants cuz she's lived so long!
